A hydraulic seal is used to contain fluids and maintain the hydraulic pressure (piston seal, rod seal, back-up ring), to stop the inlet of impurities and to preserve the lubricating film on the rod (wiper seal) and to resist any deformation under a radial load by guiding the piston and rod (wear ring and guide strip).
Hydraulic seals and pneumatic seals are designed as per the cylinder working pressure, cylinder speed, operating temperature, working medium and application.
Hydraulic seals are generally relatively soft, non-metallic rings captured in groove or fixed in a combination of rings, forming a seal assembly, to block or separate fluid in reciprocating motion applications. Hydraulic seals are vital in machinery. Their use is critical in providing a way for fluid power to be converted to linear motion.
Hydraulic seals can be made from a variety of materials such as polyurethane, rubber or PTFE. The type of material is determined by the specific operating conditions or limits due to fluid type, pressure, fluid chemical compatibility or temperature.
A static hydraulic seal is located in a groove and sees no movement - only sealing within its confined space, acting like gasket.
A type of dynamic hydraulic seal called a rod seal is exposed to movement on its inner diameter along the shaft or rod of a hydraulic cylinder. A type of dynamic hydraulic seal called a piston seal is exposed to movement on its outer diameter along the tube or bore of a hydraulic cylinder.

Hydraulic applications are challenging for Seals. Not only must the hydraulic sealsprevent leakage of fluid from the Cylinder, but hydraulic seals must also withstand high pressures, extreme temperatures and transverse forces within the cylinder. In such applications, the function of Hydraulic Seals goes far beyond preventing fluid leakage.Hydraulic systems are sealed using a combination of specialized seals. Hydraulic Rod seals prevent leakage of fluid from within the cylinder to the outside while hydraulic piston seals prevent fluid from flowing across the cylinder head. This allows pressure build up on one side of the piston, making the Cylinder extend or retract. Wear rings guide the piston and piston rod within the hydraulic cylinder, absorbing transverse forces, preventing metal-to-metal contact. Scrapers or Wipers scrape dirt, foreign particles, chips or moisture from the piston rods as they retract into the cylinder, preventing contamination.

NBR (Nitrile Butadiene Rubber)
Nitrile rubber (NBR) is the general term for acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer. The ACN content can vary between 18% and 50%. While the acrylonitrile content is important, the resistance to oil and fuel is more so. Conversely, the elasticity and compression set are not as good. The NBR has good mechanical properties and good wear resistance. However, its resistance to atmospheric agents and the ozone is relatively low.
Depending on their structure and fluorine content, fluoroelastomers can vary in terms of chemical resistance and resistance to cold. This FKM-based rubber is very often used for high-temperature hydraulic and pneumatic systems, industrial valves, injection/fuel systems, motor seals and high-vacuum systems.
As an Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer copolymer, EPDM is commonly used for hot water taps, cooling systems, brake systems, dishwashers and washing machines.
This HNBR-based elastomer is obtained through selective hydrogenation of the NBR's butadiene groups. It is commonly used for power-assisted steering and for air conditioning.
This FVMQ-based rubber is very often used for fuel systems.
The FVMQ has mechanical and physical properties that are very similar to those of VMQ. However, the FVMQ offers better resistance to fuels and mineral oils. However, resistance to hot air is not as good as that of VMQ.
Polymers containing ethyl acrylate (or butyl acrylate) have a small amount of monomer, which is necessary for cross-linking; ACM is a material with better heat resistance than NBR. It is often used for automatic gearboxes.
As a methyl acrylate and ethylene copolymer, AEM is considered to be better resistant to heat than ACM. Its characteristics make it an intermediary between ACM and FKM.
This CR-based elastomer is used in the refrigeration industry and for ventilation systems. This chloroprene was the first synthetic rubber to be developed and marketed.
FFKM has the best resistance to high temperatures and an excellent chemical inertia. This FKM-based rubber is very often used for high-temperature hydraulic and pneumatic systems, industrial valves, injection/fuel systems, motor seals and high-vacuum systems.
